Bob Sanders Cohen at work on Yochebed's Miracle

I was born and raised in New York City. As a child my parents would punish me with a time-out in my room. They never knew that was actually a reward. I loved to be in my bedroom drawing dinosaurs, creating models, and sculpting clay figures. From an early age I knew I wanted to become an artist. As I got older, living and working in Manhattan, I was within walking distance of world-class museums and galleries. This was an amazing education and opportunity.

At the age of 25, I quit my job as an art director at a Madison Avenue ad agency and headed out to pursue my dream of living as an artist in Tahiti, Paul Gaugin being a great influence. I lived in that paradise, painting lush landscapes and beautiful Polynesian people. Sadly, my funds ran out after six months. So I left Tahiti and relocated to Northern California where I've lived ever since.

While my day jobs have varied—graphic design, art direction, construction, furniture making, and advisor for the Masters program graduates final projects at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco—my love for art has always been strong. Whenever I found time I would paint and draw. I got really serious about pursuing sculpture in the past ten years. I started with clay, then graduated to carving large blocks of plaster, alabaster, and finally marble. The picture shown is of me working on my piece "Yochebed's Miracle" in my old studio, a spare bedroom in my home. I've since relocated my working area to the garage, as the fine spray of marble dust invaded everywhere.

The works of masters like Gaugin, Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Rodin, and Salvador Dali are among my favorites. The collection of drawings, paintings, and sculpture showcased on this website are a portion of my body of work over many decades. Since 2004 I've devoted myself full-time to creating. This year, 2013, I had the good fortune of receiving a grant in the sculpture category from the Peter S. Reed Foundation, New York. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it. Please feel free to contact me. I'd love to hear from you.
